SRVLOOKUP=yes should be included in SIP.conf for unified communication compatibility

Description

A lot of vendors (including Microsoft's enterprise VoIP product) are pushing using DNS SRV lookups to resolve out SIP URI's.

With SRVLOOKUP=No I have to give out danny@pbx01.cluster2.domain.com as my SIP URI to reach my PBX. With SRVLOOKUP=yes, Asterisk will resolve the sip protocol handler for a domain via a DNS SRV record and know that sip server for danny@domain.com is really pbx01.cluster2.domain.com and forward the request.

FreePBX's default sip.conf file should include srvlookup=yes which will make the underlying Asterisk behave in a more unified manner. There is no downsite to this.

This is the default behaviour from asterisk 1.4.14 http://bugs.digium.com/view.php?id=10954).

If you look at the above page you will see a comment that says there is a down side. DNS goes down all sip goes down even internal.

I think maybe adding a checkbox in globals or elsewhere to say yes or no would be ok but a default of yes is probably not so great

  • confirmation changed from Unreviewed to Confirmed.
  • component changed from - choose - to Core.
  • version deleted.
  • milestone changed from Cut Line to 3.0.

for now it is easy enough to put into the appropriate custom sip file. We can review this in the next milestone, it did not make it onto the radar early enough to review during this current beta program. (With the hundreds of feature requests, there are unfortunately many that get missed unfortunately).

  • status changed from new to closed.
  • resolution set to worksforme.

when we introduce a GUI to handle more general SIP settings (and IAX) we will add amongst the many other requests. For now using the include files that are provided is a very simple solution so I'm closing this specific request as worksforme. If any takers want to create a module that allows generic SIP parameters set, we can look at introducing it. The infrastructure supports easily adding sip settings. (And while at it, make it generic to handle iax and other tech as well.
